About the Department

The Department was opened in 1930. Bachelors are trained in Geology and Minerals Prospecting; qualified specialists are trained in Applied Geology and Underground Water Surveying, Drilling & Geological Engineering Exploration in three educational programmes: Hydrogeology, Engineering Geology, Oil-and-Gas Hydrogeology.

In Tomsk branch of the Institute of Oil-and-Gas Geology and Geophysics of the Siberian Division of the Russian Academy of Sciences the branch of this Department was opened; the academic exchange is provided with Czech and Germany; established are contacts with the Geological Institute in China and Toulouse University in France.

Since 1996, qualified specialists are trained in Water Resources and Water Consumption and Complex Utilization and Water Resources Protection including Water Industry Management.

Since 1999, bachelors and masters are offered Nature Management (Master's Degree Programmes Hydraulics and Engineering Hydrology and Geoecology of Drainage System).

2,681 qualified specialists, 36 masters and 277 bachelors have been trained. The number of PhD and DSc holders is 130 and 26 correspondingly. 24 staff members include six professors and 15 a/professors.

The research is carried out into geological evolution and self-organization of the water-rock system; underground waters geochemistry; the improvement of the hydrogeochemical ore and oil exploration techniques; oil-and-gas field hydrogeology; water resources management and protection; underground waters exploration; local engineering and geological conditions; land hydrology; hydrogeoecology of industrialized regions.


  • strengthen the training, specialization of "Oil and gas hydrogeology" by more active involvement on this specialization of the strongest students; 
  • clarify the promising areas of training in water issues, hydrogeology and engineering geology to the needs of industry; 
  • revise curricula 2 specialties with codes 080300 and 320600 from the point of their closest approach in teaching on the first 3 courses; 
  • strengthen the educational work in order to better preserve the students; 
  • increase the volume of works and grants; 
  • conduct regular training manuals and textbooks; 
  • strengthen training manuals, primarily on courses not provided with textbooks; 
  • strengthen the material base of training, to create a class of computer and laboratory modeling of hydrogeochemical and hydrodynamic processes; 
  • strengthen basic research in the field of hydro-geochemical problems, including oil and gas regions of Siberia, carried out in conjunction with academic institutions, SB RAS; 
  • organize postgraduate training of personnel in specialties and specializations of the department; 
  • achieve annual training 2-3 PhDs and 2 Doctors in five years; 
  • strengthen efforts to attract young people to the school department and specialty distribution of employment of graduates; 
  • expand the number of articles published in refereed journals; 
  • organize the reading of 2 special courses in English and German; 
  • conduct a policy of rejuvenation of teaching staff through more active involvement of young people in science and education.
